Stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the clinical designation for a rapidly developing loss of brain functions due to a disturbance in the blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. This phenomenon can be due to ischemia (lack of blood supply) caused by thrombosis or embolism, or due to a hemorrhage. Stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological damage, complications and death if not promptly diagnosed and treated. It is predicted that stroke will soon become the leading cause of death worldwide. Risk factors for stroke include advanced age, hypertension (high blood pressure), previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack diabetes, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, migraine with aura, and thrombophilia (a tendency to thrombosis). In clinical practice, blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor of stroke.
Some stroke patients are usually bedridden, but they can walk in a matter of time but it depends on the situation. If the our patient can communicate with us there is a bigger percentage that the he/she can walk. Communication and cooperation are important during training. Physical therapy exercises can also prevent complications, patients that has stroke should sit and stand everyday to prevent complications. In our center, we provide walking devices that can be use in physical therapy treatment for stroke patients.
